Setting Your Default Formation
Overview
Your default formation is the starting point Squadd uses whenever you open the lineup builder for a new fixture. Setting it once means you don't have to re-select your preferred shape every match week.
Setting the Default Formation
Only Team Admins can change the default formation.
- Go to Settings
- Under the Team section, tap Default formation
- A list of preset formations for your team's format appears — tap the one you want
- A checkmark confirms your selection
The formation is saved immediately.

Available Formations by Format
| Format | Available presets |
|---|---|
| 5v5 | 1-2-1 · 2-1-1 · 1-1-2 · 2-2-0 |
| 7v7 | 2-2-2 · 2-3-1 · 3-2-1 · 1-3-2 · 3-1-2 |
| 9v9 | 3-3-2 · 3-2-3 · 2-4-2 · 4-3-1 · 2-3-3 |
| 11v11 | 4-4-2 · 4-3-3 · 3-5-2 · 5-3-2 · 4-5-1 · 3-4-3 |
Each number represents DEF-MID-FWD outfield players. One goalkeeper is always included.
Using a Different Formation for a Specific Match
You can override the default formation for any individual fixture without changing your team setting:
- Open the fixture → Lineup
- Tap the formation label at the top of the lineup view
- Select a different preset — or enter custom DEF / MID / FWD counts
The change applies to that fixture only. Your team default remains unchanged.
Custom Formations
If none of the presets suit your style, you can enter custom slot counts directly in the lineup builder:
- Tap the formation label
- Adjust the DEF, MID, and FWD numbers manually
- The total must equal the number of outfield players for your format (e.g. 6 outfield for 7v7)
Custom formations are per-match — they can't be saved as a new default.
How the Default Formation Affects the Lineup
When you open the lineup builder for a fixture:
- Squadd loads your default formation
- Available players (those marked available for the fixture) are assigned to slots by position — GK to GK slot, defenders to DEF slots, etc.
- The fair-play algorithm calculates the rotation and fairness score based on this formation
Changing the formation regenerates the lineup and rotation from scratch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can coaches (non-admins) set the default formation?
No — this is an admin-only setting. Coaches can override the formation per-match in the lineup builder.
My team's format changed mid-season — do I need to update the default?
Yes. If your team moves from 7v7 to 9v9, the available formations change to match the new format. Update the default formation after changing the team format.
What happens if I haven't set a default?
Squadd uses the first preset for your format (e.g. 2-2-2 for 7v7) as the automatic fallback.
Can I have different defaults for different competitions (league vs cup)?
Not currently — one default formation applies to all fixtures. Override it in the lineup builder for specific matches.
