Setting Your Default Formation
Overview
Your default formation is the starting point Squadd uses whenever you open a new fixture's match plan. Setting it once means you don't have to pick your preferred shape every match week.
Setting the Default Formation
Only Team Admins can change the default formation.
- Go to Settings
- Under Team setup, tap Default formation
- A list of formations for your team's format appears, with any shapes your team has saved at the end. Tap the one you want
- A checkmark confirms your selection
The formation is saved immediately.

Numbers are the outfield lines from the back. One goalkeeper is always included, except in 3v3, which has none.
Your Own Shape as the Default
If your team plays a shape of its own:
- Open any fixture's Match plan, tap Drag positions anywhere and drag the players to where they play
- Tap Done, then Save shape
- In Settings → Default formation, pick the saved shape (it's named by its lines, like 2-1-2-1, with "Your shape" under it)
Every new lineup in that format then starts in your shape. Coaches can save shapes too; choosing the default is for team admins. See Choosing a Formation for how dragging positions works.
Using a Different Formation for a Specific Match
You can change the formation for any individual fixture without changing your team setting:
- Open the fixture → Match plan
- Under Formation, tap a different formation, tap Custom and type your own numbers, or tap Drag positions anywhere
The change applies to that fixture only. Your team default stays as it is.
How the Default Formation Affects the Lineup
When you open a fixture's match plan:
- Squadd loads your default formation
- Available players (those marked available for the fixture) are placed by their usual positions: the keeper in goal, defenders in defence, and so on
- The fair-play planner works out the rotation for this formation
Changing the formation re-places the players and replans the rotation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can coaches (non-admins) set the default formation?
No, this is an admin-only setting. Coaches can change the formation for any match in its match plan, and save shapes there.
My team's format changed. Do I need to update the default?
Yes. A default formation belongs to one format, so after a move from 7v7 to 9v9 your old one no longer applies, and lineups start in the new format's first formation (3-3-2 for 9v9) until you pick another here. If the format changed with Start new season, Squadd has already cleared the old default for you. See Starting a New Season.
What happens if I haven't set a default?
Squadd uses the first formation for your format (for example 2-2-2 for 7v7).
What if the saved shape I chose as default is deleted?
Lineups then start in the first formation for your format until you pick another default.
Can I have different defaults for different competitions (league and cup)?
Not at the moment: one default formation applies to all fixtures. Pick another formation in that match's plan, or save a shape for each and tap the one you want.
