Taking turns in goal
Overview
Lots of teams give a different player a turn in goal, often one each quarter, so nobody is stuck in goal all season. Take turns in goal makes Squadd plan and count it properly:
- The match plan picks a keeper for each quarter (or third, or half)
- Everyone plays outfield when it isn't their turn
- Time in goal is counted separately, so a turn in goal never costs a player their share of outfield time
It's off by default. Your team's minutes played, games played and milestones don't change. Fair play just measures outfield minutes instead of every minute on the pitch.
The match plan and live match recording are part of Pro.
Switching it on
- Go to Settings → Team modules → Customise features
- Under Match day, switch on Take turns in goal
Planning the turns in goal
Open a game and tap Build my match plan. Under the pitch you'll see a Turns in goal card with one row for each quarter (or third or half, depending on how the game is played).
- The first turn belongs to whoever is in goal on the pitch. To change it, swap a different player into the goal slot.
- Every later turn is suggested for you: the player who has spent the fewest minutes in goal this season, with everyone getting one turn before anyone has a second.
- To change a turn, tap its row and pick a player. The list shows how many minutes each player has spent in goal this season, fewest first. To go back to the suggestion, open the row and tap Clear selection.
The plan then shares out the outfield places around those turns. With eight players in a 5v5 game of four 10-minute quarters and four different keepers, everyone gets 20 minutes outfield, and the four keepers get their 10 minutes in goal on top.
Under Sub Rotations you'll see each change of keeper next to the subs for that break ("Ben goes in goal"), and Projected Minutes shows each player's outfield minutes with any time in goal alongside, for example 20 min + 10 in goal.
💡 Planning your own subs with Manual? The turns in goal still apply. If a keeper isn't on the pitch at the start of their turn in your plan, Squadd tells you, so you can add a sub or pick someone else.
During the match
At each break, the planned sub card lists the subs and who goes in goal next. When you've made the changes, tap Made:
- The subs are recorded
- The new keeper goes in goal
- The previous keeper takes the place the new keeper left (or, if the previous keeper came off, the player who came on takes that place)
The live pitch and Squad page then show the new keeper in goal. If you need to change the plan mid-match, Recalculate plan keeps the rest of your turns in goal and counts the minutes already played in goal.
The below playing time warning and the half-time board both use outfield minutes, so today's keeper can still be owed outfield time like anyone else.
After the match
At full time Squadd saves each player's minutes in goal along with their minutes. You'll see it in:
- Equal Minutes: shares and averages are worked out on outfield minutes, and each player's row shows their time in goal. The PDF and CSV exports say "outfield minutes" and include minutes in goal.
- Stats: tap a player to see In goal next to their minutes.
- The player's stats page: shows In goal once they've had a turn.
📝 Minutes in goal are recorded from live match recording. A game logged afterwards with the post-match editor keeps any minutes in goal that were already saved, but can't work them out on its own.
Turning it off
Switch Take turns in goal off in Settings → Team modules. The match plan goes back to one keeper for the whole game, and fair play counts every minute on the pitch again. Minutes in goal that were already saved are kept.
